Off to Britannia and Caledonia

In 1802, my direct descendants (John and Elizabeth {Betsy} Matheson) took an adventure of a lifetime. They set sail from the Scottish Highlands (Eddrachillis) to the new world. They arrived in North Carolina but were not allowed to land. Within a year (1803) they settled in Scotch Ridge (just outside St. Stephen), New Brunswick. John was 40 when he arrived in New Brunswick. Here is a picture of their gravestone. (Matheson is misspelled on the stone and the location is in Gaelic “Adra Chiolla”)

Turning 40 this year myself, my brother and I decided it was time to journey back to the where our DNA came from. For some cosmic reason I want to put my hands in the dirt where my Scottish ancestors toiled.

But this adventure has grown! Trekkit is making an adventure TV show for the new Bell Aliant Community One channel, 13 whopping episodes starting to air in September. (Guess what! The show is called Trekkit!). So 2 of the episodes are going to be about our adventures in Scotland. Because off all the gear we needed to carry for filming we have recruited the wives to come with us :) .

We will be filming not just Scotland, but also a bit in England, so stay tuned for webisodes on Stonehenge, an interview with a Master Swordsmith, a scramble up Ben Nevis, and our first experience munching some Haggis and local brew.

Kids are off to their grandparents, the dog is in good hands (thanks Aunt Kathy and Veronica). The clothes and camera gear are packed. Time to head to the airport … starting what feels like a journey home.

Trekkit Mobile 1.5 Beta

Adventurers,

Thanks for all your feedback so far on Trekkit Mobile. We have been listening and been hard at work incorporating those changes into Trekkit Mobile 1.5. Now that 1.5 is close to hitting the Apple AppStore, we can now focus on getting out the Android and Windows Phone editions! We can’t wait.

Here is a sneak preview of the new interface. Not many new features, we focused on making it EASY!! Thanks to Jeff at OrangeSprocket with your ninja graphic guidance.

Nokia Lumia 900 Spring Trekk

The best way to try the camera on a new phone is to go on a Trekk. We just landed a new Nokia Lumia 900 at Trekkit Lab to investigate porting Trekkit Mobile to Windows Phone 7.5. As soon as the Android port is done, off to WP7, no rest for the wicked.

So I grabbed my third born son, an ATV, and the Nokia Lumia 900 and went for a Trekk. Spring means, water, mud and fun!

The pictures from the phone where not modified, just taken with the 8 MP camera, imported into Lightroom and exported out without any editing.

As most smartphones, the Windows Phone embeds the location data right in the photo so I could upload them right to Trekkit and make a Trekk.

Here is a holiday Trekk from a group of Christian pilgrims exploring the Holy Land. They arrived home on Good Friday and spent Palm Sunday in Jerusalem.

The group spent time in both Israel and Jordon and photographed many points of interest.

No matter your faith or religious disposition, Israel and Jordon make an interesting adventure —- exploring a land with deep history, diverse culture and full of archeological wonders.

Egyptian Pyramids Trekk

Check out a wonderful Trekk showing these master adventures exploring the Egyptian Pyramids.

This “Egyptian Pyramids Trekk” was created by just using a GPS equipped camera (or smartphone), which can be the easiest way to create Trekks when adventuring to far away places. You just have to take pictures, upload them to Trekkit, and it creates the Trekk, like the one below (easy eh!). Its that simple — snap photos, upload to Trekkit, share, share, share!

We think a picture is worth a thousand words. We also think having to read manuals all the time is about the most boring thing we could think of.

That’s why we have launched a series of Howto Videos to help you out.

While not as sexy (No horses or ATV’s here) as the adventure videos, they will still give you a chance to see how Trekkit works.

The videos are available all through the website as well as directly from our VideoHelp link. You can also view them from our Feedback site - just look for the Video heading.

For our corporate clients, Adventure pages are almost ready for testing. This will give you a great showcase for all of your Trekks and allow you to share with the world how your organization uses Trekkit.

The control panel for Adventure pages is also almost done. From here, organizations have complete control over their pages so that the Adventure page can be used as a stepping stone for all of your clients.

Don’t Have An iPhone? No Worries!

Along with our new website design (which we are super pumped about) we have added a new feature for users of Android, Windows or Blackberry devices.

Although you won’t get all of the features of using the TrekkTrakker for iPhone, you can still take pictures and geotag the photos. The photos will show up on Trekkit as any other photos would.

You won’t get the trail to connect the pics (until we finish the code for Android and other phones), but at least you can see what Trekkit is all about.

We are looking for a few adventurous souls to help us in the final leg of our journey. Our destination is to get our TrekkTrakker iPhone app to the Apple App Store. But in order to do this we have to test, test, test and get the final bugs and gremlins out of the system.

Becoming a Trekkit iPhone AppBeta Tester

If you are familiar with Beta Programs for the iPhone and want to jump right in, start with the Quick Start section of this blog.Following the Quick Start section is the Becoming a Trekkit Beta Tester section for those who would like to read more about the process.

Quick Start

Best is to follow these steps on your iPhone. Please forward this webpage or the link below to your iPhone. Makes it much smoother.
Navigate to this link (http://tflig.ht/pCInhD) and register for TestFlight. Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
When the new beta (1-2 days after step 1) is ready you will be emailed with installation instructions.

Becoming a Trekkit Beta Tester

As we begin the start of our Beta Testing, we want you to try the iPhone app and provide any feedback (good or bad) so that we can make the app better.

Trekkit uses an app called TestFlight (www.testflightapp.com) so that we are able to install the app to your iPhone before we release it on the Apple App Store. TestFlight will email you latest versions of our app and help keep you up to date throughout the beta process.

The reason we have to use TestFlight is Apple does not allow developers to send anyone their iPhone App without it being downloaded from the App Store.

So how do you test then?

Apple has a process which you can send up to 100 people a test version of your application BUT you must register their iPhones/iPod with Apple before this is allowed. TestFlight helps us manage this process.

To get started, on your iPhone:

1. Navigate to this link (http://tflig.ht/pCInhD), to register your device.

Please complete this step on your iPhone/iPod you wish to test Trekkit on. If you are reading this email on your desktop please open this email on your iPhone or forward this email to an email account you read on your iPhone.

2. You will need to sign up for the Trekkit Beta through TestFlight. When you click on the link in step one you will see the follow form below. Fill in the form and click ‘Register’.

3. Upon completion, you will see a thank you screen. Scroll to the bottom of the message and click ‘Open Dashboard’.

4. You will now be taken to the Register Device screen. Your iPhone/iPod needs to be registered with Trekkit so that we can add you to the Beta Program. Click ‘Register Device’.

5. Once the device has been registered, you will need to install your iPhone’s profile to TestFlight so that we can add the Beta TrekkTrakker to your iPhone. Click ‘Install’. A popup will appear. Click ‘Install Now’. The TestFlight profile is installed to your phone. Trekkit is now notified that you wish to participate in the Beta.

6. You will receive a ‘Success’ email from Test Flight letting you know you are signed up. You do not need to do anything with this email.

7. Now that your iPhone/iPod has been registered with Trekkit, we will add you to the Beta Program. As soon as the next beta is released, we will send you installation instructions. This could be an hour or 1-2 days depending on our next release milestone.

When the installation instructions are emailed to you, open that email on your iPhone and click ‘Install’. The TrekkTrakker will now be installed on your iPhone and ready to use.

If you click ‘Install’ and you see the Register Device Screen it means the device has not been successfully registered or that the beta we released did not include you (Ooops 8-) ). Just wait a couple of days and we will send a new version to you that will work.

That’s it. You will now be able to test the iPhone Trekkit app. The Icon will look like this:

Trekkit iPhone Beta Roadmap

Roadmap to 1.0

We will be adding additional features over the coming months to our iPhone app. We are looking at releasing a new version every two weeks until 1.0 is golden and ready to be submitted to the Apple App Store. There may be releases between Betas to fix critical bugs along the way.

We will also be listening to you, our beloved Beta Testers as to what features you would like to see. Many of these features will be slated for version 2.0 as we need to get 1.0 out to get to 2.0, but we do listen.
